Rasa

I racked my brain trying to think of the "perfect" way to illustrate the Sanskrit word rasa.
Maybe a little definition of the word rasa will clarify my intentions for my yoga teaching and my yoga practice.
Rasa means many things, but we will stick to the simpler meanings

Definition of rasa:
1) Flavor, taste, juice...essence
2)A subtle energy of richness, sweetness, delight

Are you getting enough "flavor" in your life...enough sweetness? Richness? Delight?
Do you substitute sugary things for real sweetness...tea and lively conversation with a friend, a good book and a fuzzy blanket, a solo trip to the museum, a candlelit bath, an hour with NOTHING on the schedule?
These are the things that feed our soul...fill our well.
We need space in ourselves and our lives to let new things come in, so we must let go of that which is no longer useful to us and pass it on to someone who does.
The practice of yoga helps us create space within ourselves...teaches to balance between effort and relaxation...doing and being...receiving and letting go.
Through recognizing that space within gives a feeling of peace, we can begin to let our outer life reflect this inner peace as well.
